Advantage-ForbesBooks, one of the largest independent business publishers in the world, has an exciting opportunity for a Managing Editor. Advantage-ForbesBooks provides a platform for entrepreneurs and business leaders seeking to grow their thought leadership and authority. We are seeking a process-driven editorial leader with impressive skills in managing, mentoring and getting results from editors, authors, and writers of all types. The perfect candidate is a leader willing and able to do whatever it takes to get the highest quality writing completed on plan and to specifications.

The mission of the Managing Editor (ME) is to lead Advantage-ForbesBooks editorial and writing teams and facilitate effective and efficient processes and outcomes of written word content. The ME will be responsible for three teams: editorial, in-house writers, and ghostwriting, and will be THE responsible party for ensuring the department meets its annual editorial goals. We are a data and process-driven organization.

A candidate with experience in business writing and editing will have a significant edge as will experience in all kinds of content -- news articles, Q&As, how-to-guides, case studies, books, journals, newspapers, and magazines. An ability to generate ideas and work independently, assign and project manage work is essential. At times, the ME will work with writers who are professional writers. At other times, the ME will work with contributors who are business owners and will require additional editing support.

The ME must have strong attention to detail and be obsessed with accuracy and process. The ME must bring energy, enthusiasm, and a positive, "find a way" attitude. The ME must have strong writing and editing skills, an ability to coax good work out of both experienced and inexperienced writers, an ability to deliver on time, on spec, and on budget. The ME will be responsible for managing multiple projects at a time and use our Content Management System to ensure all content gets published properly. The ME must have a nurturing and caring "bedside manner" when working with authors and critiquing their work.

    • Creativity/innovation - Generates new and innovative approaches to problem-solving.
    • Executive presence - Articulate communicator (both written and verbal), polished and impressive in front of an audience of co-workers, clients, or prospects.
    • Organization and planning - Plans, organizes, schedules, and budgets in an efficient, productive manner. Focuses on key priorities.

      Preferred Skills And Experiences
      • Minimum of seven (7) years of managing editor experience, ten (10) years of editorial experience
      • Experience with Workfront or other project management platforms a plus
      • Exceptional writing, editing, grammar, spelling, and communication skills
      • Thorough knowledge of the AP Manual of Style
      • Ability to meet strict deadlines
      • Ability to work collaboratively with a highly creative and senior-level clientele
      • Excellent grasp of the editorial process
      • 4-year college degree

        Work Environment
        • Initially, this position can work remotely. The ME will be required to relocate to Charleston, South Carolina to work out of our HQ within twelve (12) months of start date. After relocation, this position can work up to two days per week remotely or from home.

          • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, use hands and fingers to operate a computer, keyboard, and telephone. Near visual acuity is required in order to work with computers.
          • May occasionally require the employee to stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employees should be able to sit for an extended period of time.
          • Employee may be occasionally required to perform light to moderate lifting of office supplies, up to 20 pounds.
