Job Description Summary The Registered Nurse I on the 8 West Unit reports to the Nurse Manager. Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse I assists at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process; interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes. Shifts vary based on the needs of the department. Job Summary/Purpose : 8 West is a 24-bed inpatient mixed Neuroscience unit for adult and geriatric patients located in the West wing on the 8th floor of the main hospital. All patient rooms are private. The floor manages a variety of adult Neuroscience Acute Care patients with a focus on Neurosurgical patients including spine surgery, brain tumor resections, surgical stroke patients, and supports the Comprehensive Spine Center program. The mixed patient population provides a unique opportunity to learn about a variety of neurosurgical interventions in addition to general neurology/medical/surgical patients. 8W also manages a neuro palliative/hospice patient population at varying stages of their disease progression to include aggressive pain management. 8W also supports our sister units and care for overflow of Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and neuromuscular diseases. 8W nurses are supported and encouraged to obtain a certification when eligible. Minimum Training and Education : Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred unless current MUSC employee. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations : Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance.
