Job Description:

Summary of Position The Director of Development works under the direction of the Executive Director and with the Development and Communications Team to create and implement a comprehensive fundraising, marketing, and strategic communications program for the Charleston Parks Conservancy. He or she works to engage donors and increase donor support to sustain the Conservancy---s projects and programs. Key responsibilities include creating and managing the Conservancy---s development and marketing strategies, designing strategic communications plans, soliciting funding through a variety of campaigns, participating on the Conservancy---s management team, and directing the Conservancy---s marketing and communications efforts. The Director of Development and Communications leads a variety of efforts to engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors. This position also works with the Board of Directors to create successful fundraising strategies and to leverage board members--- time and contacts in pursuit of funding. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Development: Create and execute comprehensive development plans and strategies. Be responsible, with the Executive Director, the Board of Directors, and Development Team, for engaging community support and raising funds to support the Conservancy---s mission and programs. Lead and participate in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors; Manage and execute the Perennial Program, acting as primary organization liaison. Create and execute strategies to obtain funds from foundations, corporations, individuals and government sources through grant writing, annual appeals, events and strategic solicitation campaigns. Oversee, with the support of the Executive Director and Donor Relations Manager, the recruitment and stewardship of the Conservancy---s Perennial Program, the organization---s annual giving society. Manage, with the support of the Special Events and Corporate Relations Manager and outside event planners, the planning and execution of Party for the Parks, Shucked and Sauced, and Perennial and special project fundraising events. Facilitate volunteer fundraising committees for special projects and initiatives. Marketing & Communications: Create and execute comprehensive communications plan and strategies including public relations, media relations, online giving, digital communications, and key messaging. Oversee development, protection and updates to the Conservancy---s brand, including print and digital collateral, websites, social media profiles, and other marketing and advertising materials. Articulate the Conservancy---s mission in a succinct and compelling manner to engage others. Management & Administration: Manage the development office budgets and staff, including supervision of the Special Events and Corporate Relations Manager, Donor Relations Manager, and Marketing and Communications Coordinator, as well as contractors, interns and volunteers as needed. Work closely with the Director of Operations to oversee gift acceptance, allocation, and acknowledgement processes and ensure reconciliation with financial systems. Work closely with program staff to ensure that program, development, and marketing initiatives are integrated. Work with Executive Director to recruit, cultivate, and support board members. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES Experience with and knowledge of best practices in Annual Giving; Membership; Major Gifts; Corporate Sponsorship; Special Events; and Nonprofit Marketing and Communications Demonstrated success effectively researching, identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospects and donors Ability to cultivate relationships with a variety of people (donors, community members, sponsors, vendors, etc.) Experience managing staff, volunteers, consultants, and vendors Experience with and knowledge of local and national philanthropic communities Understanding and experience with financial management and accounting principles Excellent leadership, management, writing and communication skills Self-motivated and able to work independently to achieve a common goal Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to work well under deadlines and to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Apps, social media applications, and Salesforce EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE Bachelor---s Degree required; advanced degree or certification preferred 5-7 years of nonprofit fundraising and/or marketing experience PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends Work is performed in a normal office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards; substantial time is spent working on a computer OTHER DUTIES Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
