• Department Head of Nursing - Swain School of Nursing Department Head of Nursing - Swain School of Nursing The Citadel College CHARLESTON, South Carolina, United States Head of the Swain Department of Nursing at The Citadel The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, seeks a seasoned leader for the position of Head of the Swain Department of Nursing (SDN), a tenured position at the rank of Professor and holder of the Swain Chair in Nursing. Located in beautiful and historic Charleston, S.C., The Citadel is a fully accredited, public, comprehensive, co-educational college with a student body of 2300 undergraduate and 1000 evening and graduate students. For the past ten years, U.S. News and World Report has ranked The Citadel as the top public college in the South among masters granting institutions. One of seven departments in the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics, the SDN offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The BSN is offered both as a day program to the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and as an evening degree-completion program. Begun in 2017, the program has grown rapidly and presently enrolls 80 students. Position Responsibilities: As a senior military college, The Citadel has a unique military tradition and a mission to educate and train principled leaders. The department head is the chief academic and administration officer of the SDN and reports directly to the Dean of the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics. The position demands an energetic, visionary, and inclusive leader who will unify the faculty and program around the common goal of student success, and foster excellence in teaching/learning, scholarship, and all aspects of Nursing science and practice. Successful candidates will have strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills including the ability to listen well, communicate priorities, and exercise collaborative decision making. The department head is responsible for strategic planning, curriculum development, continuous improvement, outcomes and program assessment, meeting regulatory and accreditation standards, budgetary planning and administration, facilities management, community partnership development and outreach, faculty searches, coordinating with the dean on fundraising initiatives, mentoring and supervision of department faculty and staff, and ensuring that graduates are prepared to pass board exams on the first attempt. The chair will support student success through the development of data-driven and evidence-based processes and practices. As a faculty member, the department head is expected to participate in teaching, scholarship, and other service activities commensurate with the rank of professor. The position is a full-time, 12-month position. Requirements Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned doctoral degree in nursing or closely-related field
  • An unencumbered active license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of South Carolina or eligibility to obtain RN licensure in South Carolina
  • Successful leadership and/or administrative experience in a university setting
  • Two(2) years of clinical experience as a registered or advanced practice nurse within the primary area of courses that may be taught by the Department Head
  • Five(5) years of teaching experience
  • Academic credentials; including scholarly activity, that qualify the candidate for tenure and the rank of professor in the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics Preferred Qualifications:
    • Evidence of exemplary leadership in supporting and facilitating teaching and scholarship
    • Excellent management, supervisory, and budgetary skills
    • Experience in obtaining external funding; superior communication skills and an ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies internal and external to The Citadel
    • Certification in a nursing specialty
    • Ten years of nursing experience in service or education as a registered nurse
    • Demonstrated success in strengthening a BSN program; demonstrated experience in leading/supporting a program to successful Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation and reaccreditation
    • Demonstrated ability to build trust through collaborative decision-making, shared governance, and commitment to academic freedom; in-depth understanding of current nursing trends and best practices; and expertise/working knowledge of related professional fields. Additional Comments:
