Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Duties (§5-14):
Administer the Commission according to legislative mandates and
state policy. Administer the Commission under the direction of the
Commission Board members and state regulations and perform other
duties as assigned by the Commission. Advise members, arrange
meetings, documentation, directives. Administer grants, gifts and
contracts under the direction of the Commission to effectuate the
purposes of this article. This may include seeking federal, state
or private grants to enhance services and resources for the deaf
and hard-of-hearing. Make an annual report to the governor and the
legislature including recommendations of need. Prepare and
administer the Commission budget and reimbursement for expenses.
Conduct, coordinate and/or participate in awareness workshops, sign
language classes and presentations, outreach programs; investigate
the condition of the hearing impaired in this state. Collaborate
and coordinate with state agencies and other entities regarding
interpreting training and qualification and the use of
telecommunication devices. Legislative findings, and Seminars and
training sessions, and assistance of other agencies. Supervise and

Proficiency in communication with individuals who are deaf or
hard of hearing using varying communication modes.
Proof of competency in American Sign Language (ASL).
Experience in the implementation of state and federal laws and
policies in the area of deaf and hard of hearing, including
knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act and other civil rights laws as they apply to individuals who
are deaf and hard of hearing.
Knowledge of deaf culture, hearing loss and various methods of
communication used by individuals who are deaf and hard of
Effective written English and public presentation skills.
Ability to interact with various individuals and groups at the
local, regional, state and national levels regarding the needs of
individuals with hearing loss.
Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher
education in deaf studies, public policy and administration, or
the Executive Director may be deaf or hard of hearing
Knowledge of current federal and state laws related to
individuals with disabilities in general, and specifically to
persons who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Knowledge of the standards and procedures for the qualification
and certification of interpreters.
Knowledge of the operating procedures of state governments and
