Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff (COS) provides administrative support to the Executive Director, to whom he/she will report directly, and will manage all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Preservation Society of Charleston (PSC). The PSC is a preservation advocacy organization that was founded in 1920 as the first community-based such organization in the country. The PSC serves as a strong advocacy leader for citizens concerned about preserving Charleston's distinctive character, quality of life, and diverse neighborhoods.

The major responsibilities of this position are to provide direct administrative and coordination support to the Executive Director and to coordinate and oversee the general administrative operations of the Society, which currently has a staff of 12. Important aspects of the position are to be the primary point of contact for the Society's Board of Directors, to oversee and coordinate Human Resources functions, and to manage the procurement of office supplies and materials.

The COS will report directly to the Executive Director and will work directly with the Director of Retail Operations, the Director of Advancement, the Director of Advocacy, the Fall Tours Manager, and the Finance/Accounting staff.

Key Responsibilities of the Chief of Staff

Operations Management

* Working with Senior staff - develops and manages the organizational calendar, ensuring successful planning and coordination of programs and events

* Provides detailed oversight and coordination of programs and plans

* Provides operational support to finance/accounting department as needed

* Serves as initial point-of-contact for the Board of Directors

* Provides administrative support to Board of Directors and Committees of the Board

Office Management

* Provides general administrative support to staff

* Serves as the office's initial point-of-contact

* Manages vendor relationships and contracts

* Coordinates management of the supply, auxiliary, and maintenance services for the office

Human Resources and Staffing

* Oversees and executes appropriate human resource policies related to payroll, benefits, and general employment

* Coordinates or facilitates annual review process for staff

* Maintains a positive working environment and enhances teamwork, employee communications and morale

Minimum Requirements

* Bachelor's degree and more than five years of relevant experience in an executive office environment

* Skilled in public administration and business management

* Must be able to effectively communicate with Board Members, donors, members, and other formal contacts as required

* Ability to work independently and as a part of a team

* Minimum five years of relevant experience with word processing, spreadsheet, database

* Proven track record of organizational excellence, creating efficient systems and workflows, and successfully communicating and collaborating with office executives

Salary Range

$45,000 to $55,000
