Job Description:

The incumbent will work in the NCCOS Charleston Coral Health and Disease Program and conduct research on a variety of aspects of coral health and disease that include physical chemical and/or biological disturbances to their health. The incumbent should be able to work with a moderate degree of independence and responsibility to assigned tasks. The research uses knowledge of fundamental biological processes in corals at the organismal, tissue, biochemical, and cellular level and the impact/influence of environmental stressors (physical, chemical and biological) on coral health. The research is primarily laboratory based but can involve field-based work at other locations. The research will be conducted as a member of an interdisciplinary research team of scientists.REQUIREMENTS:

  • The incumbent is expected to assist in the development and implementation of project proposals and the development or adaptation of diagnostic methods related to achieving program objectives. The incumbent conducts experiments and summarizes data under the general supervision of the principal investigator who establishes the basic goals of the research program. The work tasks may require independent research, research conducted as a member of a team of scientists requiring regular group interations and communication, or as the team leader of a small research group.
    • The work requires knowledge and expertise in general biology, histology, immunohistochemistry, cell biology, and coral biology. The incumbent should be able to demonstrate laboratory experience in at least two of the following areas:
      • histology to include tissue processing, sectioning, staining and reading coral histology slides identifying key features for assessing tissue condition, including reproduction and features of cellular pathologies.
      • immunohistochemistry
      • photophysiology (e.g., chlorophyll measurements, photosynthetic condition assays, pulse-amplitude modulated fluorometry);
      • cell-based diagnostic assay development (marine organism oriented)
      • coral husbandry
      • microscopy and photomicrographic image analysis
      • photogrammetry
        • The incumbent assists in the routine lab operations and performs routine maintenance operations on assigned equipment as needed and keeps the laboratory safe and orderly. Also assists in the training of visiting students or scientists in specific assays as a means of technology transfer. Conducts quality control measures in the laboratory including upkeep and routine maintenance of assigned equipment and adheres to safety protocols while conducting work assignments;
          • The incumbent will be expected to participate in executing protocols or plans related to coral challenge experiments with various types of agents (chemical, biological or physical) involving:
            • applying a full range of laboratory methods, procedures and techniques applicable to the research area and making adaptations or modifications, as needed;
            • using a variety of sophisticated laboratory instruments; recognizing potential problems with experimental results.
              • The incumbent should be able to document findings in the form of records and reports which may be used for presentations or publications; and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
                • This work requires occasional weekend and evening duty to conduct extended duration experiments or to assist in the maintenance of the culture facility in the absence of assigned personnel. Emergency situations with storms and/or power outages also may require staff to assist with husbandry if coral facility staff are not available or additional help is needed.
                  • The incumbent shall keep accurate written records of all methods, procedures, and experimental results, document observations of unusual or abnormal appearance, and prepares data reports, ensure the availability of adequate laboratory supplies and maintains an orderly and safe work environment related to assigned tasks.
                    • All work is conducted under the supervision of a principal scientific investigator.
                      • Equipment, vehicles, boats, and facilities at the NOAA National Ocean Service, NCCOS at Charleston will be used for this assignment by the incumbent. All government equipment, including vehicles, boats, computers, telephone access, etc., is to be used to accomplish official government business only. Qualifications EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSThe incumbent should hold at minimum, a Bachelor's degree (minimum 10 yr experience) or Masters degree (0-1 yr experience) in one of the biological sciences. Preferred knowledge and skills in one or more coral-related techniques histology including slide preparation and reading, immunohistochemistry, reproduction, image analysis of photomicrographs, photogrammetry, cell-base bioassays, coral husbandry. Familiarity with 3-D modeling software, Adobe softwares (Photoshop, Illustrator, LightRoom etc), Python coding software. Graphic arts experience for communicating science and website design (WordPress) is desired.All applicants must pass a background check and drug screening.
