Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations, Atlanta Field Office, Charleston, SC.ResponsibilitiesJoining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise in administration to provide office services to CBP management. This position starts at a salary of $34,916.00 (GS-05, Step 1) to $50,598.00 (GS-06, Step 10) with promotion potential to $50,598 (GS-7 Step 10). Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen Homeland Security through the ability to perform Homeland Security functions by providing administrative support. In this Secretary (Office Automation) position you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals providing administrative support. Typical work assignments include: Screening calls and visitors and referring them to the appropriate staff member, supervisor, or director. Reading, preparing, routing, and proofing all incoming and outgoing correspondence and maintaining required office records and files. Providing understandable ad hoc and recurring reports; assembling data and compiling statistics. Explaining non-technical office policies, procedures and conducting training to managers and staff. Arranging travel, meetings, conferences and all materials needed for organizational visits.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentYou must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years (additional details below) You may be required to pass a background investigation CBP follows the DHS Drug-Free Workplace Plan for drug testing proceduresQualificationsExperience: You qualify for the GS-05 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Receiving and filing correspondence, records, and reports. Receiving incoming correspondence, screening material prior to distribution for suspense dates, establishing controls, and following up for supervisor. Receiving visitors and phone calls to the office, ascertaining the nature of requests and directing callers to appropriate staff. Typing correspondence, reports and similar material; reviewing correspondence prepared for the supervisor, checking for spelling, typographical errors, conformance to formats and procedural requirements. Experience: You qualify for the GS-06 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Screening callers and visitors while personally taking care of routine matters. Composing correspondence related to administrative support functions; preparing in final form all types of documentation and forms incident to the office. Reading directives and instructions pertaining to administrative practices and clerical procedures in order to be aware of new, revised, or amended procedures for such matters as preparation and processing of correspondence, reports, forms, filing, mail processing, and travel vouchers. Typing correspondence, forms, and reports from rough drafts; and providing guidance and assistance to other clerical personnel. Education Substitution: You may substitute the successful completion of a Bachelor's degree or a full 4-year course of study in any field leading to a Bachelor's degree for the experience required at the GS-5 grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours. There is no education substitution for the GS-06 grade level. Combining Experience and Education: GS-05- To combine your education and experience, you must convert each to a percentage, and then add the percentages. The combined total of your percentage of education and experience must equal at least 100% in order to qualify. If your education is currently described in quarter hours, convert the quarter hours into semester hours by multiplying the quarter hours by the fraction 2/3. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, divide the number of graduate semester hours in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level, by 18. To determine your percentage of qualifying experience, you must divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by the required number of months of experience. Add your percentages of education and experience. The two percentages must total at least 100%. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process by 02/12/2020. In order to be considered for this position, you must complete all required steps in the process. In addition to the application and application questionnaire, this position requires an online assessment. The online assessment measures critical general competencies required to perform the job.The assessment includes a cut score based on the minimum level of required proficiency in these critical general competencies. You must meet or exceed the cut score to be considered. You will not be considered for the position if you score below the cut score or fail to complete the assessment. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Ability to plan and carry out work, handle problems and deviations in accordance with established instructions, priorities, commitments and program goals.
